ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Guiding principle :
Recognition that our environment IS our economy, our natural capital, the basis of our
economic survival and success.
Support efforts to eradicate invasive species and protect the habitats of threatened and
endangered plants and animals.
Preserve Kaua'i's natural ecosystems
Support and promote traditional 'aina (air, water, land, sea) stewardship techniques
Goal : In 2020, management of development, agriculture and other activities on Kauai is based on the related principles of ahupuaa and watershed. Land is developed and used in ways that conserve natural streams and streamflows; conserve habitat for native species of plants and animals, both on land and in the ocean; and preserve sandy beaches and coral reefs. Best management practices used by government agencies, agricultural companies, other businesses, and individuals are effective in avoiding increases in floodwaters downstream; preventing beach loss; and minimizing pollution of ocean waters. All of Kauai's waters are ìfishableî and ìswimmable.î
Review and revise the Subdivision Ordinance and the Comprehensive Zoning
Ordinance, including the regulations for the Open District and the Constraint
Districts, in order to assure effective regulation of steeply-sloped lands and
drainageways. This will prevent excess soil runoff that threatens reef ecosystems and coastal water quality. One examples of such efforts is the Sierra Club Hawai`i Chapter's Blue Water Campaign. This effort is aimed at helping to protect our waters from runoff and other forms of land-based pollution through community outreach, education and involvement, cooperation with federal, state and county agencies, as well as new legislation.
Malama Mahaulepu : preserve Mahaulepu as wilderness and do not allow resort development there.
Global warming and rising Sea Levels
There is irrefutable evidence that global warming is real and occurring at an alarming rate. As the planet warms over the next fifty years, sea levels are rising, impacting our coastal areas. Hawaiëi could also be struck by stronger and more frequent storms because of these changes. Homes, hotels, businesses, harbors and waterfront properties are increasingly at risk. We must aggressively address the impact of global warming and rising sea levels for our island state.
